CONFERENCE OPTIONS
Tejas LEE Summer Conference 2009 ($250)
Designed for individuals who have already had the TOT training and for teachers,
administrators and others who will not train, but who wish to have a deeper understanding
of the Tejas LEE and early reading development in Spanish. Participants may choose
from a variety of sessions on a wide range of topics related to the Tejas LEE and
early Spanish reading. One Texas Fiesta ticket included.
Training of Trainers (TOT)* ($365)
An intensive two day training, covering the following: Proper Administration Procedures
(K-2); Proper Administration Procedures (Grade 3); Grouping and Interpreting Data
(K-3); Progress Monitoring (Kindergarten); and Progress Monitoring (Grades 1-3).
Research modules will be presented if time permits. Training of Trainer participants
will also be able to attend the Keynote sessions of the conference, but not the
breakout sessions. TOT participants will receive a Tejas LEE training binder and
a CD to turn around training to their district/Education service center (ESC) ONLY.
One Texas Fiesta ticket included.
* Texas Reading First personnel are not eligible for the TOT training. Please consult
your Reading First RTA for information about Tejas LEE Training.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
Dr. Maria Carlo,
an associate professor at the University of Miami, is a leading researcher in bilingual
education. Her research has focused on the development of literacy skills in bilingual
children and adults, including studies on adult literacy for bilingual populations,
visual word recognition in bilinguals and processing of cross-language ambiguity.
Dr. Carlo is co-principal investigator on a NICHD/OERI funded study on the transfer
of reading skills from Spanish to English among 4th and 5th grade students. She
was also co-principal investigator of a similar study among 2nd and 3rd grade students.
Dr. Coleen Carlson,
an associate research professor at the University of Houston, and the associate
director of the Texas Institute for Measurement, Evaluation and Statistics. Dr.
Carlson’s research interests include measurement development and psychometric evaluation,
advances statistical methods, program evaluation, and early literacy and language
development in English- and Spanish-speaking students. She is also the co-director
of the Tejas LEE development team.
Dr. Elsa Cardenas-Hagan,
director of the Valley Speech Language and Learning Center in Brownsville, Texas
and works with the Texas Institute for Measurement Evaluation and Statistics at
the University of Houston. Her research interests include the development of language
and literacy interventions for students who are English language learners. She is
the author of the Esperanza Program, a Spanish multi-sensory reading, writing, and
spelling program.
